Lagoon adjacent to Three Shells Cafe

SKARCHITECTS LTD were appointed to develop proposals to create an area of water for all year use to overcome the low tidal issues of Southend’s beaches.

The submission of the planning application followed a series of discussions over a two year period with various agencies including the Environmental Agency, RSPB, Natural England and the Marine Management Organisation as well as various Officers within Southend on Sea Borough Council. SKARCHITECTS LTD were successful in gaining planning consent and then developed a bid to the Coastal Communities Fund as a joint Private funded/Public Sector regeneration project.

The scheme was then taken forward by the Local Authority as the leading partner with SKARCHITECTS LTD remaining on the project board to ensure that delivery accorded with the planning consent and design intention.

The proposal created a unique destination for continued enjoyment of the water during summer months and use by other community groups such as the local yacht/boating clubs and the Southend Marine Activity Centre for acclimatization throughout winter months. The engineered solution is attractive and encourages additional habitat within the estuary. An integral aspect of the design is the broader landscape and resort improvements including a toilet and shower block.

The proposals are totally inclusive for all community groups and fully DDA compliant.

The design of the new structure respects and responds to the Estuary setting national and international designations and the context of an extremely well-used beach resort. The brief also called for a design solution to include replenishment to ensure the water remains clean and safe.
